This Shattered Tempest

Hello book lovers, guess who received an arc of the last novel in the Hurricane Wars series! Yes little ol’ me! As we may know, I adore this series and have been following it since it’s initial fan fiction stages. Now it is all coming to an end and I cannot wait for more readers to jump into this series. This Shattered Tempest is out October 6th but if you rather avoid some spoilers check out my latest post.

Summary:

Alaric hunts down Talasyn’s kidnappers and successfully liberates his wife only for the pair to learn that the kidnappers have taken something important from her. Talasyn learns to adjust back to life at the palace after her kidnapping and the knowledge that her kidnappers are working for someone high up in the dominion. Alaric is no longer confident that the Nenavar Dominion can keep them safe and the couple is long overdue for the capital much to Talasyn’s dismay.

Upon arriving to the capital, Talasyn is confronted with the harsh reality that she is still actively working for the rebellion and concurrently, to take down her husband’s empire. However, Alaric is hiding a secret of his own and his father is pushing him towards a continuation of the Hurricane Wars.

Despite beginning their marriage as a political alliance, Alaric and Talasyn have learned to trust each other and genuine feelings have formed despite the complications. However, Alaric and Talasyn’s marriage and loyalties are tested in this final installment of the Hurricane Wars.

Thoughts:

I really enjoyed the previous novel in this series—Moonsoon rising—and I was eager to feast on another vivid imagine that would rival Alaric and Talasyn atop of the World Eater. This Shattered Tempest definitely left me with some scenes that lingered in my mind much after I finished this novel. However, my favorite aspect of this novel is hands down the language Guanzon artfully weaves into the story.

What it means for you and Alaric Ossinast– that’s harder to say. Though it’s clear that your stars and his are forever intertwined.

This final installment of the series was page turning, epic, and a master piece. Guanzon masterfully weaves together plot points from the previous novels and ties up loose ends. Yes, that includes Khaede and even more shocking Alaric’s mother.

This novel immediately picks up after Talasyn’s kidnapping and it is a treat to see how Alaric quickly figures out Talasyn’s location and how he will enact revenge to get her back. But of course Talasyn is not helpless, she works to free herself from her captors and extract as much information from them as possible. The couple have come so far from the first novel as reluctant allies. Now, Alaric and Talasyn have built so much trust in each other that they act much more like the married couple they are. Despite this, Alaric and Talasyn continue their signature bickering and witty banter throughout this novel. In addition, to giving into their magnetic attraction to one another.

Aside from seeing the change of Alaric and Talasyn’s dynamic I also loved the character development that Guanzon puts both protagonist through. However, Talasyn’s character growth was my favorite. Talasyn begins this series so sure of her goal to liberate the continent from the Night Empire’s control, but her resolve slowly wavers throughout the series—and in This Shattered Tempest—Talasyn struggles with her loyalty to the rebellion and to her husband. Alaric is much more open to and in agreement with Talasyn’s ideaology than many people believe him to be and while the rebellion seeks freedom they’re method promises a continuation of the Hurricane Wars. It was delicious to see Talasyn grow and realize her own ideaology and priorities have changed.

I really enjoyed the way this novel wrapped up the series and the sweet epilogue that Guanzon included at the end is very much what happy endings are made of. I would love to see more of this universe—more of the dragons! And more of Khaede and Sevraim who became my favorite bickering and flirting partners in this book.

I am saddened to see this series end, but I am also excited to see what novels Guanzon crafts next. Speaking of which, have any readers read Guanzon’s Tusk Love? I am aiming to read Tusk Love in this fall, but I would love to hear more thoughts on it!

It has been a few years since the previous two novels were published and despite being a die hard fan of the series, I needed a refresher of the events of the previous two novels! So, if you can, I absolutely recommend rereading them before jumping into this one.
