2023 Latine Heritage month booklist!

Feliz dia de Herencia Latina! Happy Latine/x Heritage month!

Latinx Heritage Month, also known as Hispanic heritage Month, celebrates the independence and culture of Latin American countries. Latine heritage month began in 1968 as a weeklong celebration under President Johnson. Then in 1988 President Reagan established “Hispanic Heritage” month beginning September 15 and ending October 15th. But why does this celebration begin in the middle of the month? September 15th is the day multiple latin countries such as: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua celebrate their independence!

While some prefer to call this celebration Hispanic Heritage Month and others prefer Latinx/e heritage month to encompass the indigenous communities, this month-long celebration is a great time to educate yourself on Latin history and to pick up novels by some fabulous authors.

Without further ado, here are the books I’ll be reading this month. If you would like more recommendations, check out my recs from previous years.

Beautiful ones by Silvia Moreno Garcia

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Historical Fiction

Content Warning: Toxic relationship, Sexism, infertility, Sexual Content

Nina dreams of joining societies elite, but her telekinesis causes her debut to go awry. But when fellow telekinetic, Hector Auvray, arrives to town and mentors Nina, she’s mesmerized. However, Hector is hiding a secret from himself, and Nina and their romance threatens to fizzle out before it can begin.

I am once again pushing the SMG agenda! But her novels are spectacular; if you haven’t read one of her novels yet, get to it!!

Kiss the Girl by Zoraida Cordova

Genre: Romance, Retellings, Contemporary

CW: Death of parent, Toxic relationship, Emotional abuse

Ariel del Mar and her sisters have been pop icons since they were kids, but Ariel always wondered what life out of the spotlight is like. So Ariel sheds her public persona and lands a gig as a merch girl for dreamy up and coming band. And the lead singer Eric Reyes is  dreamy!

A rock star retelling of the little mermaid with Latinos in love? Yes! I am a big fan of Zoraida Cordova, so I already know I will have a great time reading Kiss the Girl!

The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera

Genre: Science Fiction, Middle Grade, Fiction, Fantasy

CW: Grief, Murder, Albeism,Genocide, Violence

When a comet destroys Earth, Perla and her family are shipped to a new planet to carry on the human race. When Perla awakens centuries later, she’s the only one who remembers life on earth because an  evil collective group has taken over and are bent on erasing the memories of all aboard.

This novel has been on my tbr for so long! And as a sci-fi lover whose always up for a new read, The Last Cuentista is a great novel to read this fall season.

Cazadora by Romina Garber

Genre: Fantasy, Fiction, Paranormal, Young Adult

CW: Sexism, Misogyny, Homophobia, Panic Disorder, Racism, Death

Manu and friends cross into the magical land of Kerana in search of Coven, a resistance group, but the Cazadoras are hot on their tail. And when the group finally meet Coven, Manu realizes the group could use a revolution, but is Manu ready to lead them?

Cazadora, the sequel to Lobizona, makes the list because I need to know how this fantastic story ends!

Peluda by Melissa Lozada Oliva

Genre: Poetry, Feminism, Family, Cultural, Coming of Age, Family

CW: Body Shaming, Swearing

Peluda is a collection of poems about learning to love your body. Peluda translates to hairy, which many women struggled to appreciate when the beauty standards advise women to stay hairless.

Oliva is a spoken word poet and educator, she’s also written Dreaming of you, a novel in verse, about a woman resurrecting Selena.
