My most anticipated reads of 2023

Hi book lovers 2023 has some amazing books set to publish this year. I know what youre thinking, Gaby it’s May shouldn’t you have posted this article in January?

Yes, that would have been a great idea but as the year goes on there are more and more novels that I learn about and that I decide to add to my tbr. So, I feel like a middle of the year anticipated reads works better for me.

Some on this list are already out but I haven’t read them yet so I am counting them.

Puerto Rican Elves?! The Last Sunrise in Eterna slayed!

Book babes and Fantasy folks know this blog loves a good fae and elf story. Last year, when Amparo Ortiz announced her next novel, Last Sunrise in Eterna, where a goth girl falls for a sunshine elf prince in Puerto Rico while participating in an magical exchange program, I knew I had to read it. 

And because Ortiz’s, The Blazewrath Games and the Dragonblood Ring were a great duology, I was super pumped for this book. And when I saw the cover for it I was sold.

Scarlet the unhinged sequel to Cinder

Last week, I shared my review on Cinder, Marissa Meyer’s sci-fi Cinderella retelling. Well, the fairytales continue with it’s sequel, Scarlet.

This time Meyer brings two new protagonists into the mix and a dreamy thieving pilot who brings the chaos.

Scarlet brings the story of little red riding hood and the Big bad Wolf into a futuristic France. But while their story unfolds, Cinder and Kai are trying their hardest to keep the world from crumbling. But who is watching out for them!

Another Persephone and Hades retelling? Yes, please!

Although Katee Roberts is a popular erotica author who has many novels under her belt, Neon Gods, released last year, is the first novel in a Greek Gods series. Neon Gods is a smutty masterpiece that humanizes Greek legends and launches them into the modern world. Hades and Persophone have a fascinating dynamic together and are the best dog parents!

I have had Neon Gods by Katee Roberts recommended to me so many times before! And I finally got around to reading the audiobook. In short it was stunning! Seriously if you have the opportunity to listen to the audiobook give it a try, it has dual narrators! 

Neon Gods is a Hades and Persephone retelling with modern twists. The Gods live in modern Olympus, and have access to cell phones, social media, books, and even paparazzi. But what makes this adaptation fascinating is the gentle leading man, Hades.

Iron Widow

When I first heard about Zhao’s novel, it was through their youtube channel, I recommend it if you like video essays, and as a writer and book blogger myself, I was excited. What I expected: historical fiction inspired by the sole female emperor of China and a polyamorous relationship. What I got: science fiction dystopia, aliens, and a throuple. And I loved it.

I am in love with Zoraida Córdova’s Incendiary!

Zoraida Córdova’s Incendiary holds a special place in my heart because she personally wanted to send advanced reader’s copies of this book to Latinx readers and reviewers. The catch, Córdova had one copy, so the chosen readers would have to take turns sharing. Ultimately, I was not chosen, but Zoriada did write me a letter thanking me for signing up and sent me a bookplate. Which was very nice of her!

Years later, I finally sat down to read this book, and I felt a little disappointed there was not an instant connection.

And then I got to the part where Ren witnesses Dez’s decapitation, and she turns into a ball of anger and revenge. Apparently, I just needed a bit of violence to appreciate the story
