Bite-sized Reviews: July

Hello book lovers! Since returning to this blog I’ve wanted to switch things up and one thing I’ve decided to do is post mini reviews for books I’ve read that month. So first let me start with a song I have been listening on repeat for a month and that is… Naked in Manhattan by the lovely and talented Chappell Roan.

The books I read this month are a mix! In total I read four novels, and I managed to squeeze a classic but as you’ll see I was persuaded by a handsome actor who narrates the audio of this classic.

A Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde

Content Warnings: Murder, Death, Suicide, self-hatred

Series: no

Genre: Classics, Fiction, Horror, Gothic, LGBTQIAP+

Notes: Ben Barnes narrates the Penguin audiobook of this story (Just thought I’d let y’all know)

Summary: Dorian Grey accidentally wishes himself immortal and it drives him mad.

Review: This novel has some relevant themes that would apply in today’s world and if set in modern times Dorian and Basil would be Chappell Roan fans.

Evocation by S.T Gibson

Content Warnings: Sexual Content, Past Child abuse, Alcoholism

Series: Yes. There is a prequel to this story that explores the tension between the trio.

Genre: Fantasy, Fiction adult, LGBTQIAP+, romance

Tags: secret societies, second chance romance, Rhys loves his wife but also loves his ex-boyfriend, David loves Moira

Summary: David Aristarkhov is a powerful attorney and a psychic with the devil hot on his trail, leaving David with only one person to turn to—his ex-boyfriend Rhysand. The only problem, David does not get along with Rhys’ wife Moira.

Review: This book was a fun character study of a trio of people who very much love each other and are learning how to navigate a new relationship. However, I did want more than just politics from the secret society that was explored in this novel. I also hope to see David and Moira’s relationship develop more in the next novel.

How to choose a guy in 10 days by Lila Monroe

Content Warnings: Sexual Content

Series: interconnected stand alone

Genre: Romance, Contemporary, humor

Additional Tags: rude neighbor, playboy, sloppy, bet

Summary: Gemma and her coworker compete for a promotion by giving makeovers to guys who could really use the glow-up. Gemma plays herself and falls for her client, Zach Morrison.

Review: This was a fun weekend read. I really like this novel includes some ridiculous scenarios such as summer camp, and faking orgasms to sell food. I was annoyed at the ending because Gemma realizes her job isn’t fulfilling but she decides to stay anyways. It created some doubt to the HEA.

The Only Purple House in Town by Ann Aguirre

Content Warnings: abandonment, emotional abuse, stalking

Series: no

Genre: Romance, Paranormal, witches, contemporary.

Tags: found family, he falls first, Trans character, LGBTQIAP+ characters

Summary: Iris Collins inherits her Great Aunt Victorian house intending to turn it into a BNB but ends up renting out the rooms to some interesting characters. One of whom is Eli Reese whose has never forgotten Iris for kicking his bully when they were kids.

Review: This was such a great family book. I really enjoyed the way the characters interacted and fought with one another.
